Sergei MEDVEDEV is Professor at the Free University in Riga and Affiliate Professor at Charles University in Prague. Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow University, Columbia University in New York City, and holds a Ph.D. in history. In the past 25 years, he has held research positions and professorships in Russia, Germany, Italy and Finland. Having left Russia in March 2022, currently he is a Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, as well as program host at Radio Liberty, Riga. He specializes in political history, international affairs and Russian studies.
Dr. Medvedev has written several books, including Mapping European Security After Kosovo (Manchester, 2002, with Peter van Ham), Russia and the West at the Millennium (Berlin, 2003) and Identity Politics in Wider Europe (Berlin, 2012). His most recent book on Russia, The Return of the Russian Leviathan (Cambridge, Polity Press, 2020) has won the 2020 Pushkin House Book Prize as the best English-language non-fiction book on Russia and has been translated into 12 languages. His new book, A War Made in Russia, is forthcoming with Polity Press in Spring 2023.
