Khaled Yacoub Oweis is a Jordanian journalist with a 29-year record of reporting on politics and economics, running news operations in Arab countries and writing policy papers in Berlin. A specialist in covering the Levant, with a breadth of contacts in the Middle East, and a background in covering international energy markets in London.
Currently based in Amman, he is a Jordan correspondent for The National, news outlet from the United Arab Emirates: Oweis writes news stories and features on Jordan, Syria, Israel-Palestine, and regional political analyses in the context of the current war in Gaza and changes in US and Russian roles in the Middle East.
From 2019 to 2020 he was the chief foreign writer for The National; from 2006 to 2014 he was Reuters senior correspondent in Damascus and Amman. He ran the Damascus bureau for five years.
From 2003 to 2005 Oweis managed a team of reporters covering Iraq’s energy and commodities sectors after the fall of Saddam Hussein and reported on Iraq’s reconstruction, and Iranian and Gulf competition in the country.
In 2003 he covered the war in Iraq and won the Reuters Journalist of the Year award as member of the team who covered the US-led invasion from Baghdad.
Previously, Oweis worked in London and Beirut.
From 2014 to 2017 Oweis was a Research Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, Germany.
